Notes from the second planning meeting of
The Peggy's Cove 200th Anniversary Celebration
Thursday, August 12th, 2010.
Present: Eliza Manuel, Julia Manuel, Marcy Graves, John Beale, Reg Rankin, Todd Delaney, Judy Dauphinee, Keith Ayling, Doug Poulton, Garry Meade, Ivan Fraser, Christine Lavoie, Shelley Webb, Murray Garrison, Roger Crooks. Absent: Judy Pace and John Campbell send their regrets
More ideas for the 200th Anniversary celebrations were put forth including: Resident participation and inclusion (hand out minutes of meetings to each house and encourage feedback).
Descendants of original settlers be included - perhaps a reunion of settlers (in reality there are no family relations to the original six land owners in the village therefore we would need to concentrate on the oldest families present like the Crooks, Garrisons, Manuels, and Morash families).
Concentration on our culture, heritage and history not for business.
Celebrate with acoustic music performances (not amplified).
Recreation of 1811 with re-enactments, oxen (cattle), story telling, charge 5 cents at the start of the road like they did years ago.
Host events throughout the village at different venues.
Plan a community event which would include organizing old photos, audio tapes and artifacts which could then be put on display for visitors to see during the celebration (if digitized it could be played in VIC on the big screen at all times) create a legacy pieces and preserve history.
Services held at Church during the celebrations and could include a reunion of past Ministers.
Reunion of past teachers who taught at the Old Red School House.
Monument to fishermen who lost their lives in Peggy's Cove and / or a monument for the three American sailors buried in Peggy's Cove.
Additional interpretive panels throughout the village (Troop/Westhaver house being the oldest house in St.Margaret's Bay or post office and postmaster).
Develop a keepsake program for the celebration to generate revenue and provide a great information piece to keep.
Open the lighthouse to visitors - maybe even provide access to the top.
Create an audio tour of Peggy's Cove.
Use the celebration as a way to leverage money to address the many longstanding issues which have gone on for so long in the village.
Hold a Peggy's Cove Preservation Society AGM meeting to re-instate this not-for-profit group providing a source to access funding.
HRM Community Relations and Cultural Affairs (Christine Lavoie) suggested that the department could assist the group by organizing a visionary session with a facilitator and community involvement (combine both PCPS AGM and the visionary meeting).
The department could also help us in regards to accessing some funding via grants, projects and partnerships (symphony NS, NASCAD, etc.).
Christine will contact Marcy as to when a facilitator would be available to meet with the group and community members.
